Professional Communication

Nursing practices are not limited only to the administration of drugs and the performance of treatments, but it is all about responding to the holistic needs of the patients. So, the communication skills and emotional intelligence may be considered as supplementary or auxiliary to the other situation, but in this case, they are the core competencies as they are not only necessary but inherent to safe, competent, and sufficient provision of patient care.

This evaluation will attempt to address the importance of these two components in nursing and their role in influencing the relationship between the nurse and the patient, the outcome of treatment, and the quality of healthcare. We will postulate the effect of effective and empathetic communication with the patient and the members of the family, and a nurse’s emotional intelligence on patient relations, family involvement, and the relations within the healthcare team.

Part 1: Interview

One of the interviewees in the research was a nurse called Sarah. Sarah works in a hospital, and she is posted in the emergency room section. As it was the first time I ever worked in a hospital, I was slightly afraid of what I was going to learn. I created such a situation to understand the use of communication in the practice of a nurse. As I knew it, I believed that the job of nurses consisted mostly of mundane interviews. I knew they provided medicine and helped the ill; however, I did not know the extent to which communication is valued.

I understood that it was more about doing things than saying things. Sarah was quite helpful and friendly, except for the woman. However, she did not mind rushing in her job and duties as a paralegal officer (Lam & Wolfe, 2022). This facilitated my imaginary interview. These guidelines gave me a precise set of directions as to what I was to do, and that assisted me in the task greatly.

  • Verbal Communication

As mentioned in the interview with Sarah, she believes that the best aspect of her job is communication with the patients. She said that patients who visit the ER are normally anxious or in discomfort. She must find out what is bringing all this, yet on the other hand, she feels safe. She proceeded to exemplify this by giving a scene of a small child who reported to the facility with a broken arm. The babe was crying and was unable to understand what had happened. Sarah claimed that she intentionally talked to the child in a language that the child understands and explained to the child that the doctor would fix the arm. She was also kind and composed with low tones when addressing them.

According to her, they should wait until the child asks a question (or any patient) on his or her own. She also described an example of an elderly girl who was experiencing a hearing impairment. She replied that she ensures that she never speaks hurriedly, she is clear in her speech, and also makes sure the patient looks straight at her. Sarah also told the doctors. She added that nurses must report the developments of the patient to the doctors. According to her, one needs to be as detailed as possible and to give every detail required. She stated that she had to tell me where the pain was, how big it was, and whether anything increased or decreased the pain.

  • Nonverbal Communication

Sarah further stated that an individual’s conduct is equally important as what he or she says. He also pointed out that eye contact is very crucial to the implementation of this sign language. It also elicits the fact that you are patient-oriented. She also stated that only being able to smile can help one feel better. In the next conversation, she gave an example of a man’s situation when holding hands with a patient (Saputra, 2021).

They were informed that they could be afraid of simple things, including touching and words said to them by her in the film. She could also talk about non-verbal communication, or what is commonly known as body language. She said that when you stand with your arms crossed, people might think that you are indifferent. Nevertheless, by leaning over and peeking at the patient, the patient will have an impression that you are listening to them vigorously.

  • Communication Skills Employed

Sarah has mentioned a number of significant skills. According to her, it is quite crucial to be capable of feeling with the other person, which can be understood as empathy. She referred to the example of a patient who had nervousness regarding the test he was to perform. It is necessary to note that Sarah claimed that she attempted to reassure the patient and explain the test in detail to soothe them.

She also spoke of clarity. According to her, every time she administers the medicine, she remembers to tell the patient the name of the medicine she is taking and why she is taking it. She also requests that the patient understand. Sarah has also noted that she is assertive. As an example, she gave the case of one day when a physician had directed her to perform something she knew was not in the best interest of the patient.

She explained that when this happens, the nurse must defend themselves to have a voice and present the problems being encountered in a polite manner. Finally, Sarah touched upon her relations with other nurses and doctors. According to her, the matter involves all talking to one another about the patient to provide the most suitable outcome to the scenario.

Feelings Regarding the Interview

There were a substantial number of things that I had the opportunity to learn. I also realized that the nurses use communication frequently. They use it to relieve the suffering of the patient, diagnose, and collaborate with other medical practitioners. It is not merely a matter of taking out tractors and drugs; it is a matter of touching lives. I have come to realize how communication skills can be helpful to any nurse.

Part 2: Professional Communication and Emotional Intelligence

Nursing is a people profession and care provided to them, and consequently, communication and emotional intelligence are not only a part of nursing but at the center of it; not about administering medications and working with the equipment at hand. Therefore, it is important to note that a nurse must possess good communication abilities and be capable of sensing their own and those of the patient (Lam & Wolfe, 2022).

Effective communication in nursing implies talking, hearing, providing information to the patient in a way that he or she can interpret, speaking truth, and asking questions that the patient is likely to be interested in. With effective communication between nurses, patients feel safe, build trust and willingness to adhere to the suggested treatment plan, as well as enhance collaboration between the healthcare team and, thus, safety and effectiveness of the provided care.

Self-awareness, empathy, ability to know and appropriately handle emotions, and utilize them to personal benefit in addition to the benefit of other people, these aspects of EI enable nurses to have a better understanding of the needs of patients, anticipate the potential consequences of a situation, and provide clients with more than a treatment (Santoso et al., 2021). ANA Code of Ethics touches upon the right of patients to self-determination, emotions and feelings, and trust, which should be expected in the nurse-patient relationship, in communication, and EI, so it is essential to encourage such moral standards.

As an example, a nurse will understand the concerns of a patient, react to the same calmly, and make sure that the patient is involved in the decision-making relating to his/her treatment. Therefore, communication and EI are important factors in terms of the ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care team members (Saputra, 2021). Good communication and caring patterns enable the patient to feel safe and happy with the nurses.

Nurses also serve as advocates in the sense that they come to the inclusion of the families and provide them with the information they require or make decisions about them regarding their care. In addition to that, direct and polite communication between nurses, doctors, and other staff minimizes the risk of errors, promotes teamwork, and is beneficial to patients (Nia et al., 2022). Thus, professional communication and emotional intelligence are viewed as significant aspects of the nursing profession; however, they are obligatory, in case patients are to be trusted and establish a strong bond with caregivers, so that patients can recover and restore their strength.

Conclusion

The existing evidence is directed towards the fact that professional communication and emotional intelligence are essential in the process of delivering nursing care. These are not qualities one wishes to have, but rather, qualities that play a vital role in developing therapeutic relationships, protect the patient, and also provide quality care to the patients. Patient involvement and patient satisfaction are achieved through effective communication, positive attitudinal behavior, and an approach to patient care. Moreover, emotional intelligence assists nurses with operating within the emotionally straining setting of medical care and assists clients, takes care of their needs, and collaborates with other team members.
