Part 1. The Systems Development Life Cycle for Implementation

In a written narrative, address the following:

  • Explain each step of the systems development life cycle (SDLC) for a nursing informatics project.

The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a step-by-step approach that organizations use to develop and implement efficient information systems (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023). For nursing informatics projects, such as implementing a new nursing documentation system, the SDLC includes the following steps:

Planning and Defining Requirements:

This first phase is used to set out the objectives, tasks, and purpose of the project. Stakeholders such as nurse leaders develop the system’s needs and ensure that they meet the organization’s goals (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023). For example, nurse leaders can describe what documentation is required for patient care processes.

Analysis:

In this phase, the current systems are assessed to determine opportunities for enhancement. The requirements elicited during the planning phase are checked, and the technical feasibility is evaluated (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023). Nurse leaders share their understanding of the nursing processes and patient care requirements so that the system will improve nursing effectiveness and patient care.

Design:

This step entails developing a detailed system specification such as the workflow, the interface, and the data structure. Nurse leaders engage IT personnel to increase the probability that the system’s design will be appropriate for clinical practice (Hauschild et al., 2022). For instance, a nurse leader can support easy-to-use interfaces to enhance data input.

Implementation:

The system has been developed, the tests conducted and the system deployed. Help is given to users, and the system is introduced into healthcare facilities (Hauschild et al., 2022). Nurse leaders are responsible for ensuring that staff is ready and willing to learn, coordinating the training process, and managing concerns that arise in the course of the process.

Testing and Maintenance:

In this study, testing aims at confirming that the system is working as planned and meets the users’ needs. Post-deployment, maintenance includes, updates, bug fixes, and user suggestions and or complaints (Hauschild et al., 2022). Nurse leaders give feedback during testing and give support for modification in the event of maintenance.

  • Nurse Leaders in SDLC

Nurse leaders contribute valuable insights and knowledge that are necessary for the achievement of nursing informatics initiatives (Alsadaan, 2023). It guarantees the system is designed to incorporate clinical work, improve patient care, and meet objectives.

  1. Improved Usability: Nurse leaders make sure that the system design is simple and easy to use and reduce the chances of mistakes and resistance by the staff. For example, in the design phase, they can suggest specific processes that are relevant to the nursing activities (Alsadaan, 2023).
  2. Enhanced Clinical Relevance: Nurse leaders are involved in the planning and analysis of the system to provide the clinical perspectives of the system to make sure that it fits the process of care delivery (Alsadaan, 2023). For instance, they can distinguish between the necessary aspects of the system, such as real-time patient monitoring.

Nurse leaders’ involvement in the SDLC process enables them to facilitate the communication between the clinical and technical teams and therefore achieve successful project implementation.

Part 2: The Nurse’s Job and Role in Systems Development and Implementation

The job and role description should be based on the systems development life cycle (SDLC) stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the steps.

Position Title: Graduate Nurse Informatics Specialist

Job Description: The Graduate Nurse Informatics Specialist will be an active participant in the implementation team for the new nursing documentation system. This position requires the clinician to be engaged in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to provide input on system design and facilitate system utilization (Dykes & Chu, 2020). The specialist will be working with interdisciplinary teams to make sure that the system is integrated with the nursing process and will benefit the patients.

  • Define the role of the nurse in the planning and defining requirements stage of the SDLC.

  1. Engage the stakeholders to identify the system objectives and goals.
  2. Identify and record the nursing needs of the nursing staff, especially the clinicians.
  3. Identify the role of nursing in patient care delivery to improve the fit of the nursing processes (Dykes & Chu, 2020).
  • Describe how nurses contribute in the analysis stage of the SDLC.

The following should be done to determine the current gaps and weaknesses of documentation systems:

  1. Check and elaborate requirements to respond to real-life problems of the system.
  2. Join the feasibility assessment to identify the technical and operational feasibility of the project (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023).
  • Describe how nurses contribute during the design stage of the SDLC.

  1. Participate in the design of a good User Interface and workflow.
  2. Give comments on mock-ups and prototypes to keep it clinically relevant.
  3. Request for enhancements that enhance documentation correctness and productivity (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023).
  • Define the role of the nurse in the implementation stage of the SDLC.

  1. System installation and configuration of support systems.
  2. Provide educational seminars to the nursing staff that will deal with the operation of the system and its usage.
  3. Facilitate communication between the nursing staff and technical teams to solve issues related to implementation (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023).
  • Describe the nurse’s role in the testing and maintenance stages of the SDLC process.

  1. Participate in system testing to fix problems that may occur during deployment.
  2. Gather and process user’s comments and suggestions to make changes in the system (Saravanos & Curinga, 2023).

The above is associated with the management of system performance after the implementation and supporting the changes that may be deemed necessary.
