Executive Summary In this project, the researcher suggests the use of a Medication Barcoding and Electronic Administration Record (eMAR) System in our healthcare organization to minimize medication administration errors and improve patient safety (Pruitt et al., 2023). The system will also come with the new technology of barcodes scanning with the already existing electronic health record (EHR) to make sure that all patients get the right medication, dose and route at the right time. The project will reduce human error by automating and verifying medication administration, enhance accuracy of documentation and workflow efficiency of nursing personnel. This project is in line with the evidence-based practice suggested by both the Joint Commission and the Institute of Safe Medication Practices in the measurement of medication safety in the healthcare setting.
Stakeholders Patients
Increased safety and minimization of medication errors (Gates et al., 2020).

Bedside Nurses

Simplified workflow, less manual workload.

Pharmacy Department

Proper dispensing and stocking.

Informatics Nurse Specialist

Training, system design and evaluation.

IT department

System integration, maintenance and support.

Hospital Leadership and Quality/Safety Committee

Monitoring safety outcomes and regulation quality.

Outcome/Efficiency Target The most significant measure of this project is a decrease in the number of mistakes in the administration of medicine by 30 to 40% during the initial 12 months of the project implementation according to the internal audit of safety and incident reports. The benefits of efficiency are reduced time spent on manual documentation, better medication tracking, and quicker quality metrics reporting. The enhancement of it will be achieved by real-time barcode validation of patient ID and medications, automated recording into the eMAR, and unification of the pharmacy dispensing data with the HER (D’Errico, 2022). The closed-loop medication administration system will be a great idea that will ensure a significant improvement in accuracy, decrease in adverse drug events, and general patient safety.
Technologies Required
  1. Any medication administration point should have barcode scanners.
  2. The Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) was integrated with the current EHR.
  3. Barcoded unit dose labelling pharmacy information system (Jessurun et al., 2021).
  4. Wireless network infrastructure to facilitate real time scanning and data uploading.
  5. Nursing personnel and pharmacy team training modules and competency tools.
