The end of any affair, whether personal or career-related, is normally preceded by a variety of emotions of depression, panic, uncertainty, and even happiness. Dramatic expressions of such emotions may be applied in social work practice since the relationship is established on trust, support and vulnerability. The fact that I could terminate myself has helped me realize the importance of being open/reflective. I deal with endings in my practice with clients to acknowledge the reactions they create, get used to them and make them normal. This makes the clients understand that it is very natural to be confused when a good relationship is over. Allowing clients to share their thoughts and emotions will assist in making the closure healthy and ready the client to the future transitions.
The establishment of the idea of termination during the initial several sessions is a very important ethical and professional practice. In this initial dialogue there is the emphasis of the necessity of a helping relationship being structured, purposeful and timed. Clients should also be trained at the initial stages to reduce the chances of being dependent as well as allowing them to visualize a life that does not revolve around the service. It also allows the clients to take ownership of their goals and movement since they understand that it is mutually beneficial and geared towards empowering them (Guarino et al., 2024). Getting ready on time will help make the end of treatment more mindful and client-focused, as the termination process will not be abrupt, unexpected, and overwhelming.
The dismissal of social workers can be due to many reasons. When there is planned termination, the entire process is normally successful since the clients have achieved their goals, no longer in need of the services or they have experienced a higher level of care. Termination can also occur because of the logistical issues, which can be change of location, change of insurance or the employment of social worker.
This is more difficult with a surprise firing. They occur when the clients abruptly leave the treatment, fail to attend multiple sessions, or encounter crises, which obstruct the treatment (Feinstein, 2021). Such terminations result in the social worker and the client having incomplete progress and unmet goals. The social workers are advised to communicate frequently and discuss the barriers in the initial stages of the therapy to reduce the risks of the unplanned terminations, and evaluate the engagement in the therapeutic process.
The dismissal should be properly organized, purposeful, and conducive. It is among the primary activities because the review of the client progress takes into account the strengths, achievements, and progress of the client since the onset of the treatment. It will assist the clients to perceive their accomplishments and develop their self-esteem. The other crucial purpose is the development of a progressive safety plan, particularly, in cases when the client is exposed to chronic diseases or hazardous conditions (Hadian et al., 2025). The continuity of care when the formal relationship is no longer maintained is provided through the use of referrals to local supports, other forms of therapy, or other sources. Finally, it provides emotional space to clients who discuss their feelings about the ending, which lead to healthy processing and closure. It is a strengths-based model, which teaches the client to handle upcoming changes on his own.
Conclusion
The process of termination is one of the most important stages of social work, which enables the client to revisit and analyze the progress made and be ready to live a life of his/her own. Discussing the terminations in advance, knowing the causes of planned or unplanned terminations, and planning the closing activities, social workers can make sure that the clients are supported, and the process of closing is conducted ethically. Lastly, successful termination improves confidence of the client and builds the skills acquired as well as promoting future stability beyond the therapist-client relationship.
