Title: NRS 430 Define critical thinking and evidence-based practice

Critical thinking is a thoughtful decision that a nurse makes based on data collected from a patient through observation and analysis to make an informed decision to improve patient outcomes. It uses objective data and not opinions to guide the decision to save patients’ lives. On the other hand, evidence-based practice uses proven clinical methods based on up-to-date research and patient preferences to formulate and implement care that ensures patient safety and promotes health (Dean, 2018).

Critical thinking entails decision-making, problem-solving, clinical reasoning, and the nursing process to make informed decisions. It uses acceptable standards to help solve patient problems (Turner, 2005). With this, the nurse collects data, analyzes, prioritizes, develops interventions, and evaluates. Critical thinking is essential to help the nurse see changes in the patient’s condition and intervene on time. Critical thinking is also crucial because it allows the nurse to make safe, efficient, and skillful interventions (Papathanassiou et al., 2014).

Nurses use critical thinking skills to intervene when a problem is identified. After identifying the problem, the nurse analyzes, interprets the information, and makes the best decision to help assist the patient based on practices acceptable through research(evidence-based). Critical thinking and evidence-based helps to improve patient outcomes.

Critical thinking in nursing is the process applied by nurses to solve problems related to patient care. It is an essential process necessary to provide efficient, safe, and skillful nursing care. Nurses who use critical thinking skills become influential in decision-making, resulting in enhanced effectiveness and more favorable patient outcomes (Faubion,2023). Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care (Sackett, Straus, Richardson, Rosenberg, & Haynes, 2000). It is a problem-solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from research with a clinician’s expertise and a patient’s preferences and values (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). When delivered in a context of caring and in an organizational culture that supports EBP, the best patient outcomes are achieved.

From experience, critical thinking is one of the most essential skills to have as a nurse. Personally, I think that it is a nurse survival skill because it is the best resource when your patient’s life depends on it. For me, this skill was sharpened overtime through a combination of applying my nursing knowledge, evidenced based practice (EBP) and clinical experience. One of my most recent examples was yesterday when of one of my patients kept on having elevated blood pressures even after administering intravenous antihypertensive medications. The physician was present and was ready to order a higher dose of the antihypertensive drug. I took some time and applied my critical thinking skills to assess this situation and noticed that it was the large amounts of intravenous fluids causing my patients’ blood pressure to skyrocket. In nursing, the interpretation of patient data is an essential part of critical thinking. Nurses must determine the significance of vital signs, lab values, and data associated with physical assessment, (Faubion,2023). I presented my findings to the physician and suggested to reduce the amount of IV fluids that the patient was getting and recheck the blood pressure an hour after before proceeding to give the higher dose of medications. By half of the shift, this patient’s blood pressure went down significantly after stopping the intravenous fluids and there was no need to give the antihypertensive drug. Just imagine if I had not used my critical thinking skills what could have happened? At the end of the day, my patient was so much improved, and I was able to build a good rapport with him and the physician. EBP is the foundation on which quality improvements are made, thus directly impacting patient outcomes. Experienced nurses can see these changes regularly occurring in their daily practice (Steven,2013). At its core, critical thinking helps promote positive patient outcomes and encourages effective communication between patients, families, and team members, (Faubion,2023).

A Sample Answer 5 For the Assignment: NRS 430 Define critical thinking and evidence-based practice

Title: NRS 430 Define critical thinking and evidence-based practice

  • Critical thinking encompasses a cognitive process whereby individuals engage in systematic and logical analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of information (Patricia, et al., 2022). This process necessitates the questioning of assumptions, consideration of alternative perspectives, and drawing conclusions grounded in evidence. On the other hand, evidence-based practice pertains to the integration of the most excellent available evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to guide the nursing profession.

Within the realm of nursing practice, critical thinking involves the application of reasoning skills to evaluate patient situations, identify problems, and arrive at well-informed decisions. “It entails the collection of pertinent data, the discernment of patterns, and the exercise of sound judgment to determine the most appropriate interventions” (Patricia, et al., 2022). Through the lens of critical thinking, nurses are able to prioritize care, anticipate potential complications, and adapt interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual patient.

The significance of critical thinking in nursing practice is multifaceted. “Primarily, it enhances the process of clinical decision-making, thereby enabling nurses to provide care that is both safe and effective”. By subjecting information to critical evaluation, nurses can identify gaps in knowledge, acknowledge biases, and steer clear of making unfounded assumptions (Patricia, et al., 2022). “Furthermore, critical thinking fosters problem-solving skills, empowering nurses to address complex issues that arise in patient care and fostering collaboration with the broader healthcare team”. Lastly, critical thinking nurtures a commitment to lifelong learning, encouraging nurses to remain up-to-date with the latest research findings and evidence in order to enhance patient outcomes.

The role played by critical thinking and evidence-based practice cannot be overstated in achieving positive outcomes for clients (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). By seamlessly integrating critical thinking into evidence-based practice, nurses can make well-informed decisions that are firmly rooted in research and clinical expertise. “This approach ensures that interventions are not only effective and safe but also tailored to the specific needs of individual patients” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). By continually evaluating and adjusting their practice based on evidence, nurses can continually improve patient outcomes, enhance overall patient satisfaction, and contribute to the ongoing advancement of nursing knowledge.
