Reflection on Nursing Informatics

What is Nursing Informatics?

Nursing informatics is a rapidly evolving specialty within the nursing profession that integrates nursing science, information management, and technology to enhance healthcare delivery. According to McGonigle et al. (2014), it focuses on transforming raw data into meaningful knowledge to support clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. Its influence extends across multiple areas, including:

• Patient safety and quality of care

• Educational systems and professional development

• Interprofessional communication and collaboration

• Technology adoption and meaningful use

• Healthcare planning and patient satisfaction

My Self-Assessment Score

In my AACN Essentials self-assessment, I scored 23. While my performance demonstrated strengths in several areas, there are aspects that require improvement. Specifically, I do not yet feel fully confident in using technology, though I am motivated to develop stronger navigation skills through this nursing informatics course.

Areas for Improvement

A major area I identified for growth is the ability to effectively integrate emerging patient care technologies into clinical practice. The healthcare environment is becoming increasingly dependent on technology for safe, high-quality care. Therefore, as nurses, we must continually advocate for our patients by ensuring we are competent in utilizing such systems to support safety, quality, and efficiency in practice.

Application of Technology in My Role

In my current role, I work with a healthcare software system called HCS. Although the platform is new to me, I have been able to navigate it adequately. Still, I aspire to achieve greater proficiency to improve efficiency and accuracy in patient care tasks.

Hebda et al. (2019) emphasize that healthcare professionals today are expected to possess a more extensive knowledge base than ever before. Mastery of informatics tools is no longer optional—it is essential for professional growth and patient safety. One area that particularly interests me is the possibility of implementing a standardized informatics system across all healthcare facilities. Such a system could improve continuity of care, streamline workflows, and reduce the need for retraining each time a nurse transitions to a new workplace.
