A new-hire nurse is assigned an 85-year-old female patient with a Diabetic foot ulcer. However, the nurse is not well-versed in the nursing management of a patient with this diabetes complication. The purpose of this paper is to describe databases relevant to EBP around the Diabetic foot ulcer diagnosis that could be used to help the new hire nurse better take on EBP.

Communication Strategies

The nurse can apply various communication techniques to communicate to nurses when encouraging them to research diabetic foot ulcers. The communication strategies include tailoring individual messages and using narratives.  The nurse can tailor communication messages for individual nurses. This increases knowledge on a specific topic and fosters behavior change. Narrative communication is delivered using stories, testimonials, or entertainment education (Dudley et al., 2023).

My preferred clinical guidelines on diabetes and related complications are from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). For example, the 2023 Standards of Care in Diabetes contains all of ADA’s current clinical practice recommendations.

It aims to provide providers, researchers, patients, payers, and other stakeholders with the components of diabetes care, general treatment goals, and tools to assess the quality of care (ElSayed et al., 2023). The ADA guidelines should provide the best evidence on diabetes foot ulcers since its recommendations are based on an extensive review of the clinical diabetes literature, supplemented with input from ADA staff and the medical community.

Academic research databases will include PubMed and CINAHL Complete. PubMed has been selected because it is a comprehensive database containing article abstracts from national and international medical journals. The CINAHL Complete database has also been selected because it provides full-text articles and citations from multiple scholarly sources (Hopia & Heikkilä, 2020).

The identified medical journal is “The Diabetic Foot: Recent Advances and Future Developments.” The journal discusses the use of innovative approaches and smart technologies to optimize the management and prevention of foot ulceration. This is by identifying high-risk patients for timely interventions, individualizing foot ulcer offloading, and increasing patients’ adherence to protective footwear.

The selected E-book is Diabetic Foot Ulcer: An Update by Zubair et al. (2021). The ADA also provides professional books on diabetes that can be used to source information on diabetes management and care. Furthermore, the website that I have found to contain useful information and resources related to diabetes and diabetes complications include the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists  (ADCES), the American Diabetes Association, and Diabetescare.net (Diabetes DPG, n.d.). For instance, ADCES is committed to improving prediabetes, diabetes, and cardiometabolic care through innovative education, management, and support.

Conclusion

The nurse can employ communication strategies like tailoring individual messages and using narratives to encourage nurses into engaging in research. The hospital’s library and resource center are ideal places in the workplace environment to complete research on a diagnosis of interest.
