Interdisciplinary Theories That Support Nursing Practice
The nursing profession fully adopts three core elements, namely team-based clinical practices, scientific knowledge and compassion. The framework of my nursing practice philosophy includes standardized patient-centered care, which combines evidence-based practices, ethical decision-making roles, and social advocacy efforts. To me, the field of nursing is not restricted to medical care because it also covers in-depth knowledge of the psychological, social, and environmental factors that determine the health of a patient.
This framework is based on the middle-range and interdisciplinary theories and will help address the foundational areas of nursing, which are the person and the environment, health, and nursing domains. This ideology, in combination with its application of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework, assists the Walden University in reaching its social transformation objective. The combination of these components gives me the capacity to provide whole mental health care that treats the patients with compassion and efficiency in spite of their personal needs.
Intersection of Personal Philosophy with Nursing Domains
My nursing philosophy encompasses the concepts of teaching that are based on person and environment fields and health and nursing fields. Individual attention is necessary in every patient as they have unique needs that encompass physical needs as well as psychological needs and sociocultural factors. Provision of holistic nursing requires the health practitioners to know their patients in their entirety and provide support to their emotional and spiritual states. Every person requires respect and what is known as decent healthcare service with a consideration of their life experiences (Solberg and Naden, 2019).
Physical and social environments have great influence on the health of a patient. Patients Eligible in my care have access to supportive healing conditions since my practice is centered to offer quiet relaxing spaces to psychiatric patients and develop strong therapeutic relationships to facilitate trust-based healings. Health is an active notion that encompasses physical and mental and social elements of health (van Druten et al., 2022). The whole-person healthcare model was my method since it comprises not only the treatment of diseases but also proactive care with an introduction of patient education and defense work of the mental health.
Nursing is an art as well as science that implies that its workers have to combine the skill of being empathetic with their scientific knowledge and evidence-based interventions. My nursing practice model is based on advocacy activities, patient-focused care delivery, and the desire to pursue ongoing learning. In my opinion, nurses have a duty to deliver caring services and keep up with the current developments in the healthcare research and practice.
Alignment with Walden’s Mission
Walden University is working towards the purpose of achieving social change by providing educational services and promotional activities. Since I am proactive in pursuing health justice, the better access to mental care, and equitable allocation of healthcare services, my nursing philosophy can help Walden University to achieve its purpose. Working as a mental health nurse allows me to get an idea of why it is crucial to eliminate the stigmatizing beliefs, make sure that everyone gets the support he or she requires, and eliminate the obstacles to care.
To deliver high quality patient care during social change nursing practices, the nurses have to conduct research besides policy campaigns and community outreachs that result in systemic change (Flaubert, 2021). The use of research and community partnerships helps me to develop sustainable positive transformations in mental health care to both the individual patient and the society as a whole in the process of nursing.
Alignment with SDOH Framework
To a great extent, the approach of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) fits my personal philosophy as it demonstrates the way healthcare services and other factors, including education, and economic conditions, affect health outcomes. The wellbeing factors affecting the nursing practice indirectly affect the mental health of the patients. Besides insurance limitations and the lack of access to psychiatric services, mentally ill individuals have to overcome a financial barrier (Carbonell et al., 2020).
My nursing care philosophy acknowledges that it is not enough to treat the symptoms as one should know about the underlying factors that contribute to the mental illness. As a psychiatric-mental health nurse, I will be on the frontline in campaigns to eliminate stigmas linked with mental illness and providing more access to healthcare to the whole population, especially the underserved communities. Knowing more about social determinants, on the whole, will allow me to provide more effective patient-centered care, involving the life situations of people.
Middle-Range Nursing Theories Supporting My Philosophy
The Comfort Theory and Uncertainty in Illness Theory proposed by Kolcaba and Mishel respectively provides a solid support to my nursing practice philosophy since both theories are middle-range theories. The Comfort Theory developed by Kolcaba is a crucial informational resource to my holistic care approach as it illustrates how comfort should be perceived based on physical and psychospiritual and environmental and sociocultural points of view.
Comfort is a very important part of patient well-being in mental health nursing. Indicatively, a quiet and safe environment in psychiatric environments can be given to minimize anxiety and encourage relaxation. Psychospiritual comfort can also be improved by emotional support and counseling and allow patients to make meaning and purpose of their experiences (Tavares et al., 2022). Using the framework suggested by Kolcaba in my practice, I will make sure patients are provided with holistic care that will account for every aspect of their health.
The Uncertainty in illness Theory proposed by Mishel is an invaluable ground to my work as a mental health nurse. As disease-related ambiguity is a factor that leads to psychological adjustment and coping response, this paradigm looks at how patients interpret and cope with the ambiguity. Mentally ill patients face various types of ambiguity in the context of their future health conditions, treatment methods, and diagnosis (Triberti et al., 2020).
The cases of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are characterized by the inability of the patient to comprehend what he has and what outcomes this illness will have, so the future outlook is still unclear. To implement the theory formulated by Mishel in practice, three strategies will have to be employed, namely, therapy sessions to introduce diagnoses, stress management education, and support groups (Romero-Pastor et al., 2025). The interventions introduced by nurses reduce uncertainty and provide patients with power and result in high-quality lifestyle.
Interdisciplinary Theories Supporting My Philosophy and their Integration
The concept of multidisciplinary approaches still remains important in my nursing practice. A Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) is a multidisciplinary strategy that is commonly applied in mental health care and helps me in my nursing approach. Given that CBT trains patients to change negative beliefs and learn new skills, it fits my patient care philosophy and would assist them in learning healthier coping skills.
In the case of depressed or anxious patients, they will use evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy plans that would increase their ability to cope with their discomfort through the integration of cognitive restructuring with relaxation strategies (Curtiss et al., 2021). Since this method of therapy coincides with my dedication to evidence-based practice, the outcome of patients becomes better.
The Hierarchy of Needs offered by Maslow is a theory, which can be used to help my nursing philosophy. Human beings have to address the basic needs before proceeding to the attainment of psychological goals and personal satisfaction. This framework is applied in my professional practice to guide the organization of my patient care provision. Stable housing, ample nourishment, and even social support should be ensured before anticipating that the patients will participate in more intensive therapy. Mental health patients encounter numerous obstacles including homelessness or food insecurity and understanding these issues enables me to offer better and understanding care.
Using the combination of nursing and the interdisciplinary theories, I will be able to offer comprehensive evidence-based care. Other theories like CBT are used to improve the patient coping mechanisms, and the Comfort Theory by Kolcaba ascertains the holistic well-being. The Hierarchy of Needs by Maslow assists in choosing a priority of patient care, whereas the Uncertainty in Illness Theory developed by Mishel will enable me to assist the patients who experience uncertainty due to mental health issues. Such synthesis can be used to provide a holistic approach to nursing that enhances patient satisfaction and health outcomes.
