Professional Identity and Capstone Planning
This assessment is a reflective discussion of my personal development as a master’s degree nursing student with regard to how my specialization and practicum experiences have influenced my personal identity and future aspirations. It also discusses the incorporation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in nursing practice and why they are so crucial in patient-centered care, professional role modeling, and organizational culture. Lastly, it looks back at my growing interests in the master’s in nursing (MSN) capstone project with a focus on possibilities to meet significant challenges in healthcare through evidence-based, equitable, and patient-centered interventions aimed at promoting both clinical excellence and professional growth.
As a master s-level nursing student, reflect on how your specialization and practicum courses have influenced your professional identity. What are your goals for future career development?
My practicum and specialization courses have contributed greatly to the definition of my professional identity as an evidence-based, patient-centered nurse leader. Through these experiences, I have improved my ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice, be able to critically assess complex cases, and participate in interprofessional collaboration to maximize care outcomes. I have also improved my commitment to enhancing the quality of care, ethical care, and health equity. In the future, my professional objectives are to move into leadership and teaching positions, make contributions toward improved policy and practice, and seek ongoing professional development in order to further expertise in advanced practice nursing and patient safety.
How can nurses integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core components of their professional identity?
Nurses can incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into their professional identity by practicing cultural humility, making care respectful of each patient’s background, and advocating for populations that are at a higher risk. It involves active listening, considering bias, and committing to continuous learning on cultural competence. Nurses can help to advance equity by addressing social determinants of health. They have to ensure equal access to the resources and engage in policy work to reduce disparities (Flaubert, 2021). Inclusion is facilitated by building cultures in which patients and colleagues feel valued and worth. By how DEI concepts are put into practice, nurses build trust, improve outcomes, and ensure ethical, patient-driven care.
Think about a patient-centered care experience in which you applied diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. How did you empower patients to make their own health decisions during that experience?
In an experience of patient-centered care, I treated a non-English speaking patient who had poor health literacy. In order for me to provide the same care, I used interpreter services and provided education materials in the patient’s native language. I helped with questioning, explained medical jargon, and explained treatment in layman’s terms, ensuring the patient fully understood their options. By being sensitive to the habits of culture and engaging family support where needed, I increased inclusion and trust. This strategy enabled the patient to be actively involved in decision making, to choose the plan of care that was most congruent with his or her values, and to have confidence to care for his or her health outside of the hospital.
How can you inspire colleagues to uphold racial and social justice efforts and serve as professional role models in addressing implicit bias at work?
I can inspire staff to uphold racial and social justice with equitable and respectful treatment in each interaction, foster an accountable culture, and encourage explicit conversations about implicit bias as they are happening. A process of facilitating reflective practice and open conversations about diversity helps staff to acknowledge their own assumptions and grow in cultural humility (Stubbe, 2020). I can also share evidence-based resources, improve ongoing DEI training, and advocate for policies to close gaps. By always portraying fairness, compassion, and advocacy for every patient, I am a role model to inspire others to incorporate justice and diversity into practice. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare environment.
What topics interest you for your MSN capstone project? Reflect on opportunities you encountered during your specialization courses. Consider your passions within nursing and any specific issues or challenges you’d like to address.
For my MSN capstone project, I am most curious about knowing about quality improvement programs that minimize hospital-acquired infections, to be specific, central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in critical care. My specialization courses highlighted the importance of evidence-based bundles, staff education, and use of electronic health record (EHR)-driven monitoring, which are aligned with my interest in patient safety and infection prevention issues. I also see opportunities to address disparities in care through equity-focused strategies in prevention programs. This project would allow me to synthesize the leadership, clinical competence, and systems thinking in an effort to improve care outcomes, improve staff accountability, and aid in facilitating sustainable change in nursing practice.
